No, no, that's a lie. Flynn's a pretty terrible navigator. But he tries. Oh, how he tries. (This is coming a bit late, but hopefully early enough that Flynn's appearance in his proper form on Sunday will go over well!)
Real Name: Aisling Flynn
Known Name: Flynn Asher
Gender: Female – dresses and passes self off as male
Age/Birthdate: 19
Last 'home': Living with her parents in a small town, in which she kept on losing jobs but making friends with EVERYONE.
Faction: League of Privateers for Free Trade and Acquisitions
Guild: The Con Artists (who will be happy to ally with other guilds - Smiley Army, want some friends? :3)
Airship Position: Navigator
Physical Description: Flynn is a very young-looking (and don't tell him, but effeminate) boy. He has a round, cheerful face and bright eyes, and always has a smile on his lips. He has short auburn hair that is always all over the place, and wearing his goggles on top of his head has never helped. He hides a braid down the back of his shirt. His goggles are a simple design of brown leather, with a magnifying glass over the left lens. He uses them only to read small portions of maps or when the crew heads through a dust storm, but they have a bad habit of slipping down his head and clonking him in the nose.
Flynn wears simple, sturdy clothes. He has brown pants that are baggy until the shin, where they become tight and tuck into cute, pale boots (Aisling couldn't pass them up, even if she's trying to pass off as a guy!). He wears a darker brown button up shirt, the sleeves always rolled up, and a blue vest over that with his aviator pin proudly stuck on the left lapel. He wears a belt full of pouches, all with fairly useless items. On the belt he wears a pouch with a collapsible telescope (which he uses incorrectly half the time - "Guys, the port is still SO FAR AWAAAAY~") and folding glasses for reading maps. His maps are in a very makeshift holder, slung over his shoulder with his shoulder bag - again, generally filled with useless items.
Personality: Flynn is remarkably awkward. Like, upside down awkward turtle awkward. He trips over his own feet all the time (him and Icky in the same room become freaking pinball balls, no lie), can never drop his voice down enough to sound like even the most prepubescent boy unless he's doing a monster voice, volunteers for everything and typically fails spectacularly, and spends all his free time coming up with the cheesiest lines to use on the captain in hopes of her finally noticing him. He's like a precious little annoying-as-hell puppy. You alternately want to help him and kick him, depending on your mood and what he's doing. He's sweet and means well, but manages to muck up most any task he's put to no matter how hard he tries.
His hardworking personality, though, more often shines through than his clumsiness and his inability to perform most tasks on his first try. He will work at something until he's decent at it - but usually doesn't master anything, finding a new skill he needs far too quickly. He's honest, though, and appreciative, and people are often taken aback by his innocent personality. He never recognizes insults, and if you talk to him, even if it's to be condescending or mean, he thinks you're trying to make friends with him - and if there's one thing he can actually do well, it's make friends.
Background Story: Aisling Flynn was always known as "special" in her little hometown. People didn't like to gossip cruelly about her, but everyone knew her and her quirks. Born to two hopelessly normal parents, she was getting into trouble as soon as she could toddle out of her house - which was late in those toddler years, as she could never quite work out how to get her feet to stay under her. She enjoyed exploring, first the town and then the outlying lands. By fourteen, she had traveled often to cities outside the town, but always came back quickly. By fourteen, she had also started working. Unfortunately, by about nineteen, she was running horrible low on available jobs. No one could turn her away when she asked, but it usually took no more than three weeks of broken windows, sloshed drinks, or chemical explosions to get her fired, though employers always did it with a heavy heart. She has the charisma and cuteness of a puppy you want to take home, but even Upside Down Awkward Turtle has nothing on this awkward woman.
It was toward the end of her first week as a serving girl at Coleen's Pub that she found her life about to change much more permanently than normal. A childhood friend, Bailey, had stopped in with the crew she had found herself with to celebrate. Aisling had always looked up to Bailey whenever she came by to visit, so she was excited to see Bailey's new friends. The excitement died out fast, however, and was replaced by an emotion she hadn't felt before - pure, true love. Unfortunately, the object of that love was a woman - the captain. Aisling was crushed - she is straight. She asked about anyway, and found out that the captain was "a straight up bitch," according to the head mechanic. Figuring that meant really straight with no chance of going gay, Aisling rushed off, returning ten minutes later with her hair cut short, bindings on her chest, and boyish clothes she had rummaged from several neighbors. Introducing herself as Flynn Asher, she convinced everyone - somehow, it was probably due to their drunken nature - that she was a great navigator after hearing they needed one. She was accepted and has officially held her first job for longer than three weeks! These people are patient.
Flynn is a really incompetent navigator, mostly because he's never done it before. He can read maps okay, but really gets lucky more often than anything else. He wants nothing more than to get the attention of their lovely captain. Flynn is also not masculine. At all. He is almost girlier than the resident tranny. Somehow, the rest of the crew overlooks this, even when Bailey makes strange remarks about it. She emphasizes gender pronouns with the poor boy. The crew he has joined is filled with misfits that only by sheer luck - and friendship not all of them will admit to - manage to work well together.
If you had to sum up your character in five words: Clumsy, awkward, optimistic, lovable, innocent
Weapon of choice: His tongue - no, really. Flynn tries not to fight. He would rather talk it out. If it comes down to it - usually when someone threatens one of his friends - he will use whatever is on hand. This is usually only his telescope. Unless he can use his maps to give someone a papercut.
Flynn looks forward to meeting everyone this weekend! (And I'm sorry I won't have much time, if any, to work on making relationships among the folks of Orlandia ahead of time.)
